ANNAPOLIS FEATURED COMMUNITY | MURRAY HILL

Many clients of mine prefer to be within walking distance to downtown Annapolis. Murray Hill’s proximity to downtown makes it convenient to have dinner or grab your morning cup of coffee as well as come home to a private and quiet neighborhood setting without ever having to get in your car.

Why does Murray Hill stick out in people’s minds?

If you have children, like I do, Murray Hill feels like the perfect place to raise them. Although, Murray Hill is not solely for the Annapolis young family. The community also attracts the down-sizer or empty nester. Many are looking to sell their home in the suburbs for less overall maintenance, in many cases less acreage. If they choose Murray Hill, they can still experience quiet streets, but be able to lock their door and explore the state capital on foot.

Interested in how this small part of Annapolis came to life? It all started with a man named James Murray who was a Scottish immigrant from Britain in the early 18th century. James Murray was a resident as well as a noticeable politician in Annapolis. After Murray passed in the 1900s, the land was sold in .10 acre plots by Murray’s family and a man named George T. Melvin(the first known real estate developer in Annapolis). In 1902, part of this land was turned into the Annapolis Emergency Hospital by several women and then later moved to it’s current location on Jennifer Road. The 4.5 acres was named Acton’s Landing, which today many know as a development consisting of upscale homes, townhouses and condos steps from the Historic District, Church Circle and West Street.

There are still original homes dating back to the early 1900s in the Murray Hill neighborhood. Others are newer custom builds with mixed architecture and professionally designed landscaping. Often you will find charming front porches with welcoming decor, especially during the holidays. One attribute that all of the homes in Murray Hill have in common, is their convenience to downtown, parks, docks and breathtaking views. Everything is walkable, making the homes extremely desirable. If Murray Hill is where you end up living, you will get to be a part of this close knit family at the annual neighborhood events including an Easter egg hunt, Fourth of July parade and end of the summer picnic. The strong, supportive community feel of Murray Hill is hard to come by in today’s market and I feel lucky to be a part of it.
